Gastroback Design BBQ Advanced Control vs Ninja Woodfire: Which Is Better?

The Gastroback Design BBQ Advanced Control 62539 and Ninja Woodfire Electric BBQ Grill & Smoker OG701UK offer convenient electric grilling without charcoal or gas. However, they are designed for slightly different needs. The Ninja has more cooking functions and can add wood-smoked flavour. The Gastroback focuses on spacious, practical grilling while costing less and being easier to clean. For most shoppers who mainly want to grill, we think the Gastroback is the better-value choice.

Price and Value

At the stated prices, the Gastroback costs £244.90, while the Ninja Woodfire costs £299.99. Choosing the Gastroback therefore saves £55.09. The Ninja offers more functions for the additional cost, including smoking, air frying, roasting, baking, reheating and dehydrating. These may be useful if you want a multi-function outdoor cooker. If you primarily want a capable electric grill, however, the Gastroback gives you more cooking space for less money.

Cooking Space

The Gastroback provides approximately 1,500cm² of cooking space. Its surface includes a smooth plancha section for fish, seafood, vegetables, pancakes and eggs, alongside a ridged section for steaks, burgers and sausages. The Ninja has a 28 x 37cm grill plate, providing around 1,036cm² of cooking space. It can still hold a substantial amount of food, but the Gastroback offers roughly 45% more surface area based on the stated measurements. That extra room makes the Gastroback especially useful when cooking several ingredients or preparing food for a group.

Grilling Performance

The 2300W Gastroback has six heat settings covering temperatures from 60°C to 240°C. This provides plenty of control for gentle cooking, plancha recipes and high-temperature grilling. The large surface also makes it easier to cook several ingredients without overcrowding the grill. Its smooth plancha and ridged BBQ sections can be used for different foods, allowing you to prepare steaks, vegetables, fish or breakfast dishes together. This flexibility makes the Gastroback particularly practical for everyday meals and entertaining. The 2400W Ninja reaches up to 260°C and can cook with its lid open or closed. Lid-down cooking is useful for thick cuts of meat, frozen food and dishes that benefit from circulating heat. However, for everyday grilling, the Gastroback’s larger dual-surface plate offers more usable space and greater flexibility.

Smoke and Cooking Functions

The Ninja’s biggest advantage is its integrated smoker box. This burns hardwood pellets to add genuine wood-smoke flavour while electricity provides the cooking heat. It is an appealing feature for brisket, ribs, pork shoulder and other traditional barbecue dishes. Its seven cooking programmes also make the Ninja more versatile than a standard grill. It can grill, smoke, air fry, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate. The Gastroback does not offer smoking or automated cooking programmes. Instead, it concentrates on open grilling and plancha cooking. If you do not expect to use the Ninja’s extra modes regularly, the Gastroback may be the more sensible purchase.

Cleaning

The Gastroback’s non-stick surfaces allow grease and rendered fat to drain into a collection tray. Its removable cooking plates and grease tray are stated to be dishwasher-safe, making cleaning relatively straightforward. The Ninja also has a non-stick grill plate and removable grease tray, but its main cooking components need to be handwashed. Only the pellet scoop is listed as dishwasher-safe. For frequent use, the Gastroback’s removable dishwasher-safe parts give it a clear convenience advantage.

Indoor or Outdoor Use

One of the Gastroback’s biggest advantages is that it can be used indoors, making it suitable for year-round grilling regardless of the weather. This is particularly useful in the UK, where rain can quickly disrupt plans for an outdoor barbecue. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding ventilation, heat clearance and suitable surfaces. The Ninja Woodfire, by comparison, is strictly an outdoor-only appliance. It is suitable for gardens and patios with access to an appropriate power supply, but it cannot be brought indoors when the weather changes. For households wanting an electric grill they can use throughout the year, the Gastroback is the considerably more practical option.

Which Electric Grill Should You Choose?

The Gastroback Design BBQ Advanced Control is our recommended choice for most households. It costs £55.09 less than the Ninja, provides considerably more cooking space and combines smooth plancha and ridged BBQ surfaces in one appliance. Its six heat settings make it suitable for everything from delicate fish and vegetables to burgers and steaks. The removable dishwasher-safe plates also make cleaning easier, while its suitability for indoor cooking means it can be used throughout the year. The Ninja’s smoking and air-frying functions may appeal to committed outdoor barbecue enthusiasts. However, the Gastroback delivers the better overall combination of space, convenience, flexibility and value for money. For shoppers who want a dependable electric grill rather than an outdoor-only multi-cooker, the Gastroback is the clear winner.
